Does talcum powder work to stop chipboard squeaking?
Does talcum powder work to stop chipboard squeaking/creaking? The short answer is NO! Certainly not for any length of time, and no, I’m not saying talcum powder will provide a short term fix!
Along with that crazy idea, why not throw WD40 on the chipboard, washing up liquid, candle wax, oil??? Because literally, no matter what you do, the squeaks and creaks will just keep coming back. The only way to stop the squeaks and creaks is to go for a permanent solution. In other words, get rid of that chipboard!
In my twenty plus years in the flooring trade, I’ve not come across one instance where talcum powder (or any waxes or snake oil etc) has provided a permanent solution (or even short term solution!) for squeaking/creaking chipboard.
The squeaking or noise coming from your chipboard is caused by one or several of the following. Loose fixings rubbing against the chipboard. Chipboard rubbing against chipboard. Stud wall base rail fixings rubbing against the chipboard. Chipboard rubbing against wall ties or joist hangers. Excessive deflection (movement) in the joists. Below ceiling plasterboard fixings. Pipes. Cable and/or pipe fixings. A powdered lubricant like talcum powder will not STOP the associated noises from the issues above.
So perhaps talcum powder or the like will act as a sort of lubricant in areas where there is friction (two surfaces rubbing against each other), but as with anything that’s constantly rubbing together, it’s never long before the lubricant gets worked out.
