If you’re dealing with annoying squeaks underfoot, you’ve probably asked yourself: Do screws fix noisy floors? It’s a common first thought, and trust us, we’ve been there.

In the early days, long before SqueakFix was even a thing, we tried just about every DIY tip and trick out there. Screws were top of the list. They’re cheap, easy to install, and everyone from builders to developers seems to recommend them.

But here’s the truth: screws don’t fix noisy floors. In fact, they often make things worse.

Why screws are always the first suggestion

When floorboards start creaking or chipboard starts groaning, most people (including tradespeople) turn to screws. It’s the go-to fix. Developers, in particular, are known for this, they’re often reluctant to spend money on more effective solutions. If you’re chasing your builder to sort out the flooring in your new-build home, this might sound very familiar.

Screws seem like a logical fix. But they rarely work. And when they don’t, it’s not just disappointing, it’s frustrating and expensive.

What actually happens when you add screws

Over the years, we’ve seen thousands of screw-based fixes fail. Special screws, long screws, short screws, even screws used with mending plates or glued seams, none of them solve the root cause of floor noise. In most of our projects, the first job is to remove all of these attempts before we can actually fix the problem properly.

In fact, on around 90% of our jobs, we’re pulling up screws before we do anything else. We’ve seen it all. And we know it doesn’t work.

It’s not just screws

People have tried everything, from diluted PVA glue on seams to creative metal brackets. But if you’re still hearing squeaks and creaks, you already know the result. Quick fixes don’t last. And most of them don’t work at all.
