What is the problem with chipboard flooring?

What is the problem with chipboard flooring? From our many years observing and having to deal with chipboard flooring, there are several notable problems.

The main, most obvious, and likely relevant problem to you, is it squeaks and creaks.

Over the length of time we’ve had the pleasure (sarcasm) of dealing with chipboard flooring, we’ve experienced pretty much every type conceivable. From treated, untreated, installed this way, and installed that way. Every time the old story keeps coming back, it squeaks.

With that, it’s worth noting that your property is not unique. The problem of noisy chipboard is wide spread. To strengthen that point, unfortunately you’ll have to take my word for this, we’ve received emails from all over the country, North to South, East to West.

To answer the titled question, chipboard flooring is made from small bits of recycled wood based materials. These bits can be anything from fine real wood saw dust to ground up thrown away doors and frames etc. Once refined to a certain size, these bits are then mixed into a vat of adhesive, and compressed to the required shape. Now, the huge problem with chipboard is over the years, the integrity of it breaks down. We often uplift 30 to 40 year old chipboard and it will literally break away in our hands. The adhered fibres simply aren’t built to last. Especially if the joists or substrate underneath it’s attached to is uneven. I often present an analogy to our clients – think of a Weetabix, put a screw into it, hold that screw and wiggle up and down, side to side. Within 10 seconds, you’ll see exactly what chipboard does over a 10 year period.

The problem with ‘Chipboard flooring’ is the ‘flooring’ part. Chipboard absolutely has it’s uses. It absolutely has a place in our world. I’d rather see waste wood put to good use in the construction industry rather than simply incinerated i.e. Composite doors, panelling etc. I don’t even mind Chipboard Flooring in a low used loft space. I think it’s ideal in that environment. However, in areas of normal every day use and over a long period of time, Chipboard Flooring is certainly not fit for purpose. Particularly, if you’re living in your forever home!
