Problem chipboard, a complex issue

Failed chipboard flooring is more complicated than most people realise. The common advice you’ll see online; “just do this” or “just do that” – might sound simple.
We must have read every forum post and every article on the topic of failed chipboard floors. Believe us, if it were that easy, SqueakFix wouldn’t exist, and most projects wouldn’t start with stripping out previous DIY or tradesman attempts.
Why do chipboard floors fail?
Several factors cause chipboard floors to fail. Poor installation is a common culprit, for example, installers may not allow the boards to acclimatise properly, or they may perform substandard workmanship. Weather can also play a part, especially when exposed structures get rained on. Even building regulations and flawed construction methods contribute to failure.
Failures rarely involve chipboard alone. In fact, purely failed chipboard is exceptionally rare. Over the years, we’ve developed systems to tackle other common causes of noise and movement. These include fixing joist hangers, repairing ceilings, addressing warped or sistered joists, securing partition wall fixings, reinforcing building straps and noggins, and of course, replacing or stabilising the chipboard itself.
The challenge of fixing problem chipboard
Anyone who has tried to fix noisy flooring in properties built from the 1970s onwards knows the struggle. You have to remove furniture and floor coverings, carry out the repairs, and then put everything back, only to discover the fix hasn’t worked. Then it happens again. On average, we become the third company or attempt at solving the same problem after people have tried different screws, oils, or DIY hacks.
It’s frustrating, exhausting, and honestly, soul-destroying.
Get it done once
